2009 Gala a Roaring Twenties Success!

Not since the actual Roaring 20s has such a colorful mob of high-spirited flappers and Al Capone wannabes spilled into the Masonic Center. The molls were all decked out in their most glamorous boas, beads and sequins and the guys sported  pin-striped suits and fedoras, though a few set a more decorous tone with elegant tuxes.

Led by inexhaustible Joanne Stewart and Jeannette Brenner, the Gala committee transformed the grand ballroom of the Masonic Center into Spokane’s swankest speakeasy, all in crystal, black and white. Flapper gals from Finders Keepers welcomed the revelers with a sparkling glass of champagne while piano music by Greg Presley filled the air. Emcee Susanna Baylon kept up the pace for the eventful evening --no small task --while keeping the raucous guys and dolls in relatively good order. (Well, no gunplay, at any rate.)

The audience surveyed the groaning tables of silent and loud auction items, scrutinizing the tempting offerings with the focus of a scientist at the microscope. Ten lucky tables scooped up the sweet, calorie-dense prizes of the Dessert Dash –some of the most exquisite desserts baked in Spokane, guaranteed to destroy the resolve of even the most iron-willed dieter. The blame (or glory) rests entirely on the generosity of the city’s best bakeries and restaurants.

Fueled by roasted salmon and chicken dinners from Glover Mansion caterers, the live auction went into full swing. Despite a sore throat, auctioneer Austin Booker was masterful in extracting hefty bids from the crowd, who did their bit by offering only token resistance. Later, Seattle DJ Kevin Hoole kept the tunes coming and the crowd cavorted until midnight. Onlookers were entertained by some highly energetic and original moves, and not just interpretive Charlestons either.

Not to be defeated by a queasy economy, SPA will again give thousands of dollars to several worthy projects: the Sunburst Light at the Fox, restoration of the Masonic Center, and SPA’s Heritage Fund. Gala Chair Linda Milsow and her army of volunteers toiled many hours to make it all happen but they insist that virtue is its own reward. Next year, they suggest, you may want to experience it for yourself!
