Whether you’re restoring a historic building, researching your neighborhood’s past, or helping a local landmark tell its story, Spokane Preservation Advocates wants to help fund your work. SPA’s Heritage Grants offer up to $5,000 to support projects that preserve, protect, or celebrate Spokane County’s historic places. Applications are due for our Spring award cycle on April 1 and for Fall on October 1 at midnight.
What We Fund
SPA Heritage Grants support both physical preservation and program-based projects, including:
Bricks and Mortar Projects
- Restoration or rehabilitation of historic buildings
- Exterior repairs that follow historic preservation standards
- Enhancements that preserve the historic integrity of a property
- Note: All work must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and follow local design guidelines when applicable.
Spokane Register Nomination Support
- Eligible expenses include consultant fees, research, printing, scanning, and records access
- Note: SPA does not fund physical work on private residences, but homeowners may apply for nomination support grants.
Interpretive and Educational Projects
- Historic surveys or inventories
- Interpretive signage, plaques, or markers
- Publications (books, brochures, reports)
- Public education initiatives that promote preservation
Who Can Apply
- Nonprofit organizations
- Community or advocacy groups
- Religious and civic organizations
- Public agencies
- Building or property owners (except for physical work on private residences)
Important Grant Details
- Maximum grant award: $5,000
- Requests over $1,000 require a 1:1 match
- Funds are reimbursed after the project is completed and approved
- Projects must be completed within one year of award
- Organizations may only receive funding every two years
